The American Dream in the 1940's
Considering that World War II was being declared, the American dream was all about peace in the '40's. The American Family was all about a common household- husband, Wife, two kids, a dog, and a house in the suburbs with the classic white picket fence. This basically meant that people were all suppose to be carefree and average.
A Dream Deferred
by Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
